Ace of Aces: Powerhouse series
Ace of Aces uses a clever system for one-on-one action as WW1 fighter pilots (it's been applied to other things). Each player has a book, the pages illustrated with the view from their cockpit – hopefully with the enemy in view, preferably through gunsights. Along the bottom is a list of possible manoeuvres. Both players choose one, cross-reference it with the number their opponent gives and go to the page that shows the new view. And whoever got it right says "dakka, dakka, dakka!"
Take too much damage and you're falling out of the sky – parachutes are for wimps! Though you can try to run away instead.
I had a lot of fun with this series back in the 1980s and am thrilled that Mr B Games is bringing them back. Starting with the "Powerhouse" planes – late war fighters, specifically a Spad XIII onone side and a Fokker D.VII on the other. Production is sumptuous with colour illustrations throught, the books coming in a slipcase that also holds a tray for the tokens needed for the Advanced game. The Advanced game adds some complications (like guns jamming) and you really need to be sitting at a table to play it. (The original rules are also in the booklet.)
For 2 players, age unspecified, playing time 20 minutes: £60.00 (£50.00 tax free outside the UK)
