Tulip Bubble
This is an excellent bidding and bluffing game of the 17th century Dutch tulip mania. At its heart are gorgeously illustrated cards of different tulip varieties. Each round, players have new arrivals to bid on. However, the losing bidders get some cash, which is a useful bonus – though they can always borrow money to buy their tulips. Then you need to buy some more tulips to sell so that you can repay your loans...
The aim is to make a profit when you sell your tulips, of course. However, the market moves according to what players don't buy, so that's tricky. In addition, there are collectors who will pay a premium for specific sets of tulip cards. The game ends either when the bubble bursts (leaving all tulips worthless) or if a player buys the coveted black tulip. It's a terrific game that I introduce to new players all the time.
I now have the 'slim' edition from 2022 that comes in a shallower box.
For 3-5 players, aged 15+, playing time 60 minutes: £32.00 (£26.67 outside the UK)
